Distinguished fellow, former dean at the Yale School of Environment, and author James Gustave Speth published an excellent opinion piece on the Yale Environment 360 website this week. The article “Clearing Skies: Opening a New Path on Climate and the Future” offers a new approach to our thinking around adapting to the climate crisis, one in which our communities and ecosystems come first. Speth delves into the pitfalls of our capitalistic consumerism and prompts us to ponder how to change the systems themselves instead of adapting to the systems currently in place. This article while dense is hopeful; we are not alone in this shift of ideals- community oriented greening is a growing movement. Many of us understand the detrimental impacts of society’s fascination with individualism and know the importance of shifting power to a greater population and making space for more voices, including the voices of our flora and fauna.
